SUPPORTING NATIVE PLANT CONSERVATION IN GEORGIA / CAUCASUS
The flora of the Republic of Geoegia is both rich and unique. Over 380 endemic vascular plant species have been recorded and many are well known for their medicinal properties. With habitat degradation, illegal harvesting and pollution a major threat, the race is on to catalogue and conserve the country's incredible flora.
The Global Trees Campaign is working with Bakuriani Alpine Botanical Garden to electronically record its primary forest collection
Following the successful native plants collection digitisation work by the botanic gardens of Tbilisi and Kutaisi leading to thier incorporation within BGCI’s Garden and PlantSearch databases, we are continuing this approach and extending it to Bakuriani Alpine Botanical Garden (BABG).
This garden is located in the Borjomi district of Georgia on the northern slope of the Trialeti Range (1,650 meters a.s.l.). BABG is considered the only alpine botanical garden in the Caucasus. The collections of the garden, which includes a 10 ha fragment of primary forest of spruce, pine and beech, mostly feature Caucasian plants (up to 400 species), the arboretum comprises 125 species of trees and shrubs (including 75 Caucasian woody plants). Its collections have not yet been electronically recorded nor are there any visitor materials including maps. The garden currently includes two scientific researchers and one laboratory assistant who will be working on the project.
