CONSERVATION AND REINTRODUCTION OF BRETSCHNEIDERA SINENSIS, AN ENDANGERED SPECIES

The Global Trees Campaign is working with the South China Botanical Garden to study propagation techniques, initiate ex situ cultivation and raise local awareness on the needs to conserve the endangered Bretschneidera sinensis.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Bretschneidera sinensis is the only species in the family Bretschneideraceae and is found in South Western China and Northern Vietnam. Thought to be a relict species of the Tertiary era, the tree is a popular ornamental due to its attractive shape and charming flowers.

In recent decades, natural populations of B. sinensis have been greatly reduced in size. The greatest threats to the species are logging and habitat loss, but over collection of seedlings and low seed germination are also likely to be significant factors.

Studies into the biology and life history of B. sinensis have revealed that there are three main factors making it vulnerable to population decline: poor pollination, seed germination and plantlet development. In addition to studying these problems, this project aims to assess the genetic diversity of remaining populations and raise awareness of B. sinensis conservation in China.

Cooperation with local government and communities is an essential part of the conservation of this species. Work is underway in collaboration with local governments to designate a protected area for the species. Local people will be involved in the reintroduction and development of B. sinensis conservation.
