The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew is one of the world's leading botanic gardens and has in its collection over 1 in 8 of the world’s known plant species.

A good resource for information about native trees of the UK, provided by the Woodland Trust.
International Forest Information

CIFOR conducts research to inform policies and practices that affect forests in developing countries.

The FAO forestry department works in partnership with governments, communities, individuals and organisations to ensure that forest are used in a sustainable way. The website has useful resources such as global maps of forest cover and databases of forestry and timber trade information.

ITTO is an intergovernmental organization promoting the conservation and sustainable management, use and trade of tropical forest resources.
• Illegal Logging Info http://www.illegal-logging.info/
Illegal logging and the international trade in illegally logged timber is a major problem for many timber-producing countries in the developing world. The purpose of this site, maintained by the Energy, Environment and Development Programme of Chatham House in London, is to provide background information on the key issues in the illegal logging debate.

Forests and Climate Change

• Forest Stewardship Council www.fsc.org
An international, non-governmental organisation founded in 1993 to promote responsible management of the world's forests. FSC certification is achieved by forests that are managed to a high social and environmental standard. FSC labelling gives consumers the choice of buying timber from well managed sources and, at the same time, produces an incentive in the marketplace for good forestry practice.

A network facilitating trade links between companies committed to achieving and supporting responsible forestry, run by the World Wildlife Fund.

Part of the Greenpeace Ancient Forest Campaign, the Forest House allows you to find out how much of the wood in your home comes from unsustainable sources, and discover what the sustainable alternatives are.
