As part of Eden Project's theme of Biodiversity and the Beat, FFI developed Tunes out of Tat as part of its SoundWood Education programme. Tim Cumine, coppice worker and multi-instrumentalist with WoodWorks, percussion based ensemble, made the links between endangered timber trees, musical instrument production and the opportunities for re-using discarded wood products to build simple musical instruments. The demonstration showed how woods are employed in different parts of music making and how rare and tropical hardwoods woods can be replaced or re-used in home-made xylophones, drums, whistles, shakers, didgeridoos and berimbau. After exploring these themes together, the audience were invited to try out the range of instruments on show. Each session ended with the formation of a kids' samba ensemble, much to the delight of attending parents. This demonstration and workshop event was presented to groups of up to 50 people of all ages in 9 sessions in the Explorer's Room of Eden Project's Education Centre.
