Date: |
 |
16-17 May 2002 |
Location: |
 |
Presidio of San Francisco, USA |
Organized as part of SoundWood's Industry Integration Initiative, the conference was developed as part of a series of steps for moving the music and timber industries to more sustainable wood use mechanisms for musical instrument manufacture. SoundWood's objective is to facilitate the development of practical solutions that provide the most appropriate way forward to ensure long-term commitment from businesses to biodiversity conservation.
Speakers and participants included representatives from major international instrument manufacturers, independent luthiers, forest product suppliers, sawyers, certification agencies, and retailers. The conference provided an excellent forum for presentations and discussion on the current trends and challenges of sustainable wood production, procurement and use in order to:·
- Promote the benefits of Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) through certification schemes for forest product suppliers and instrument manufacturers;·
- Build solid foundations for improving sources and quantities of third party certified traditionally used species, non-threatened alternative species and rediscovered woods for building instruments;
- Provide information on the conservation status of threatened tree species in trade;·
- Launch a SoundWood Resource Market Place to improve access to buy and sell tone-woods from well-managed sources;
- Develop initiatives that increase the level of cooperation between stakeholders;
- Increase the market share of products made from sustainably produced materials through consumer and media outreach; and
- Increase the number of sustainable forestry operations world-wide with an emphasis on tropical regions through community based forestry initiatives.
