FFI was represented at this major environmental awareness raising event by performers from WoodWorks, Latin / African percussion based ensemble. Tim Cumine and Daniela McDermott presented the themes of the SoundWood Education programme, highlighting the threat to endangered trees used in musical instrument making and linking these to FFI’s work to reduce wood waste. After demonstrating a range of simple musical instruments made from recycled wood products and salvaged tropical hardwoods, the younger members of the audience participated in a kids’ samba ensemble. This event gathered local and national environmental initiatives alongside the UK’s first solar and wind powered circus, green woodworkers, renewable energy experts and a variety of performers and was organised by Derby City Council’s Environmental Co-ordination Unit, funded in part by landfill tax credits, through Waste Recycling Environmental (WREN).
