Photographic imagery can be a powerful conservation tool in its own
right. The work of FFI's Creative Director, Juan Pablo Moreiras, makes a vital contribution
to our conservation efforts by encouraging a more widespread appreciation of the species
and habitats on which we focus and highlighting the threats to their survival.

FFI has provided a grant to support the conservation of the
Endangered Clanwilliam Cedar, Widdringtonia cedarbergensis, which is
threatened by over-harvesting and an altered fire regime. Plants grown from
wild-collected seed in a local nursery have been re-established in the area of
natural distribution in a project to save the species from extinction."

Derby Summer of SoundWood 2002 - Click here to view photography
SoundWood launched its education programme for 2002 in Derby, boldly
incorporating a fresh new dimension through dance. Teaming up with Derby community dance
group Upbeat the programme brought together four schools from the Osmaston and Allenton
area to celebrate the links between the arts and the environment.
The SoundWood team, delivered workshops through which school children
explored the stories behind the woods that make their musical instruments. Guided by
Russell Keable the schools composed a piece telling the story, from destruction to restoration,
of the world's forests.
Dancers from across the community, aged from 5 to 55, combined colourful
styles from around the world to reflect, through movement, the themes of sustainability and
support expressed in the music. The grand finale held on the 17th July 2002 at the Assembly
Rooms Derby was positively electric, gathering over three hundred children, teachers, friends
and families in a carnival of support for tree conservation.
Many thanks for the kind support and good wishes of David Bellamy, Tom
Findlay of Groove Armada, Rolls Royce and EDS Derby, The Edward and Dorothy Cadbury Trust and
CETA and for the talent and enthusiasm of Merrill College, Allenton Community Primary School,
Shelton Junior School and Moorhead Primary School.
SoundWood Education 2003 aims to be the biggest yet, uniting our education
programmes across the globe from Brasil to San Francisco. For further details please contact
