BGCI become partners in the Global Trees Campaign
Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) and Fauna & Flora International (FFI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding incorporating BGCI as a core partner in the Global Trees Campaign.
The new partnership will ensure that the strengths of BGCI in bringing together the botanical community and supporting their efforts for plant conservation are fully utilised for the benefit of tree conservation. In particular, the skills and experience of the BGCI network in botanical research, education and awareness and ex-situ plant conservation will complement FFI’s strengths in in-situ conservation of species and habitats and the improvement of livelihoods.
Through the new partnership, BGCI will take the lead with the on-going assessment of the conservation status of trees and assignment of Red List categories, implemented under the auspices of the IUCN/SSC Global Tree Specialist Group, while FFI will lead on taking field action for identified priority species.
Expanding the core Global Trees Campaign partnership should also help increase the profile and outreach of the Campaign and its work, especially given the substantial public interface of many of BGCI’s members.
Dr Georgina Magin, Global Trees Campaign Coordinator for FFI, said: “We are delighted that BGCI are becoming core partners in the Global Trees Campaign. The strengths of BGCI will be a huge asset to the Campaign and its goal of conserving threatened trees, and we look forward to working closely with the BGCI network for the benefit of tree conservation around the world.”
Sara Oldfield, Director of BGCI and Chair of the IUCN/SSC Specialist Group, said: “BGCI is very pleased to be a core part of this important initiative. The Global Trees Campaign has already proved to be a serious force for tree conservation and achieved a great deal. We look forward to working together to achieve yet more”.
