ROTARY SUPPORTS GLOBAL TREES CAMPAIGN

Rotary International Britain and Ireland (RIBI) have selected the Global Trees Campaign (GTC) as one of the causes they will support from July 2009-June 2010. Rotary Clubs throughout Britain and Ireland will be encouraged to raise funds for GTC projects around the world, helping people to conserve endangered trees and improve their local environments.

Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland (RIBI) has over 55,000 members in 1,840 clubs. Rotary’s motto is “Service above Self” and its activities are devoted to helping others improve their lives.

By partnering with the Global Trees Campaign, Rotary members will be helping local people to protect and restore their native endangered trees. For example, the Global Trees Campaign is promoting sustainable use of the charismatic Grandidier’s Baobab in Madagascar – the fruit and seeds are important as food and the bark is used as medicine and to make rope, but the tree is now threatened from over-use. In Cambodia we are helping local people to replant native trees including the endangered agarwood, which can be a valuable source of income for poor communities.

The partnership with RIBI will enable the Global Trees Campaign to channel more support to local organisations and communities to save threatened trees, for people and the planet. We look forward to an exciting year ahead!
