NEW COUNTRY RECORDS FOUND IN CHINA-VIETNAM BORDER SURVEYS
Global Trees Campaign surveys on the China-Vietnam border have found ten magnolia species that are the first country records for Vietnam, four of which are Critically Endangered and previously thought endemic to China.
A joint Chinese-Vietnamese team conducted two surveys in the border area - one in late 2009 and one in March 2010, to coincide with the flowering season.
Amongst the 240 species recorded in both surveys were 27 magnolia species, at least ten of which were new country records for Vietnam. Four of these magnolias are Critically Endangered species previously thought to be endemic to China.
Overall the surveys were a great success and several other threatened trees, including three other new country records (two rhododendrons and, one camellia) were also recorded in the area.
See the border survey project pages for more information.
