NEW MAHOGANY REPORT PUBLISHED
Date: 19/05/2006
A new report on the status and management of mahogany Swietenia macrophylla in Central America is now available.
Status and Sustainable Use of Mahogany in Central America, published by Fauna & Flora International (FFI) as part of the Global Trees Campaign, consists of a synthesis of a study of the status and sustainable use of mahogany in Nicaragua and information and outcomes from a regional workshop on the sustainable use of mahogany in the Central American region, organised in collaboration with the Nicaraguan government.
The report is an output from a project funded by the Flagship Species Fund of Defra (the UK Government Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs), with additional funding from USAID and the telephone recycling scheme run by Foneback in conjunction with Vodafone, also through the Flagship Species Fund.
The project aimed to promote implementation of the CITES Appendix II listing of mahogany in Central America, and was warmly welcomed by those concerned with mahogany management in the region. The regional workshop was felt to be of great value in bringing together those involved to share experiences and ideas and promote coordination and harmonisation of procedures. There was a strong desire to continue regional collaboration, possibly through future meetings, a web-based forum or other means. The study of mahogany in Nicaragua also attracted great interest, in particular the proposed methodology for making a non-detriment finding for mahogany, working within the limitations of the information available in most countries.
The report is available to download, in English or Spanish – click on the relevant link below.
