Conservation of threatened swamp forests in Western Ghats, India
FFI is supporting the conservation of threatened Myristica and Elaeocarpus swamps in the Western Ghats, a global biodiversity hotspot with more than 4,000 plant species, of which 1,225 are endemic. These habitats are under severe threat due to encroachment from plantation crops and inundation from dams. This project is determining the species richness and status of the swamps. Threats will be identified in order to prioritize which areas should be protected. The overall conservation action will be planned with the participation of local NGOs, with appropriate government agencies and those involved in the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan. It is envisaged that this project will support a proposal for the development of a Biosphere Reserve in the southern Western Ghats.
