Status and Sustainable Use of Mahogany in Central America
Swietenia macrophylla, is a tropical tree found in Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru and Venezuela. It is, regionally, the most important source of the much sought-after mahogany timber, but it is now showing signs of population decline and fragmentation in much of its range.
This report, published in 2006, (a) summarises the status and sustainable use of mahogany in Nicaragua and (b) communicates information and outcomes generated from a regional workshop on the sustainable use of mahogany in the Central American region, organised in collaboration with the Nicaraguan government.
