RED LIST OF MAPLES
A workshop was held at the UBC Botanical Garden and Centre for Plant Research on 17-19 September 2007 to begin the process of assesses the conservation status of Aceraceae (Maples) in the wild and to assess priorities for conservation action. Initial priorities for immediate action were highlighted for six Chinese species which are Critically Endangered and in need of immediate conservation attention, with general recommendations made for Endangered species.
Maples are incredibly popular as ornamental trees across the world due to their size, form and autumnal colours with numerous cultivars available. Maples in the wild are also admired tourist attractions in their own right in the United States, Canada, Japan and Korea. Maples are also important timber species including in the production of musical instruments particularly drums, as well being the sources of Maple syrup.
The Red List of Maples was published in November 2009. Download it here: Red List of Maples.pdf (4.7MB)
