THE RED LIST OF TREES OF GUATEMALA
The flora of Guatemala is one of the richest and most varied in the world, with a high degree of endemism. It is also facing a high level of threat. The Red List of Trees of Guatemala is the first complete assessment of all Guatemala’s woody plants against the IUCN Categories and Criteria, allowing the identification of priorities and the development of appropriate conservation action to secure their future.
The Red List of Trees of Guatemala, published by the Global Trees Campaign in 2006, is the output from a project involving a wide range of institutions and scientists in Guatemala and elsewhere, including CONAP (the National Council for Protected Areas), INAB (the National Forestry Institute), the University of San Carlos and the University of Valle (all in Guatemala), Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden (USA) and Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI).
The Red List of Trees of Guatemala presents 154 species whose status within Guatemala has been evaluated. The list includes 48 species endemic to Guatemala, 23 of which are evaluated in the two highest category of threat (Critically Endangered and Endangered). These species should be the highest priority for conservation action.
